The Old Arbat is a sanctuary of the
Old Moscow, a picturesque network
of lanes and yards with its own history, traditions
and architecture. In the 18th – 19th centuries
it used to be a traditional place of residence
for the gentry and the intelligentsia. The Arbat
is associated with a lot of men of literature and
art. It is now a busy pedestrian area full of stores
and cafes, a venue for bards and artists. A stone’s
throw from here is the modern New Arbat which
bridges the city centre with its western part.
